Unfortunately due to re-licensing, the only chemical licensed for use of Chafer Grub has been withdrawn for 2017.

The company Bayer are hoping to get a replacement product that is again licensed, and expected to be on sale for 2018.

Therefore due to these restrictions we are not able to deal with this pest at present, until the new product is released.

What are they?
Chafer Grubs in lawns are the larvae of the Common Garden Chafer Beetle. I have been dealing with these pests since they first started to plague the Mansfield area several years ago and have seen them spread out year on year as far as Nottingham. I regularly unearth them during my mole control work in sandy soils. The beetles are easily identifiable.

If you have ever seen swarms of copper coloured beetles about 10mm long swarming over your lawn between mid-May to
mid-June then you have seen them. The fully grown larvae are a
C shaped whitish grub with three pairs of legs at the front, larger than the adult beetles at about 18mm if straightened out.

How do they live?
The adults emerge between the mid to end of May and breed just two weeks later burying their eggs in lawns. This is the most effective time to treat – before any damage occurs. Even if you had your lawns treated last year, if you see a carpet of adult beetles hovering over your lawn the adults will have emerged from neighbouring land and will be laying eggs in your lawn. The larvae are more easily controlled at this stage and mature within three months. The larvae feed on the roots of grasses and other plants. After three months the first signs of damage are visible with dead brown patches among green areas of turf. Affected areas of lawn are easily pulled up at this stage and can be rolled back like a carpet. Birds of the crow family (Magpies, Crows, Jays and Rooks) recognise these signs and will start tearing up the lawn to eat the grubs. Damage can be extensive and many homeowners have little choice but to re-seed or completely re-turf a lawn. Looked at in these terms a lawn treatment is a cost efficient preventative measure. Come the first frosts of winter the grubs burrow deeper. The following spring they will rise, feed for a short time again and pupate in early April for the cycle to repeat itself all over again.

Pest Prevention
Chafer Grubs can cause devastating damage to your lawns. Some of the damage is caused by the grubs chewing at the roots of the grass which subsequently kills that area of the lawn. However; much of the physical damage is caused by birds such as Magpies and Crows and larger animals such as Foxes and Badgers which scratch away at the turf/soil surface when searching for these tasty little grubs. At Best4Pests, we offer an affordable and very effective treatment to help eliminate the grubs from your lawn, thereby ridding you of those annoying visits by animals that come in and dig up your lawn. Our treatments will kill off the grubs and stop the birds from digging your lawn up. If left untreated, the damaged areas will increase each year until treatment is applied. The treatments we use can only be used by professional, licensed operatives such as ourselves. The treatment can also be used purely as a preventive measure to stop these gruesome pests from visiting your lawn in the first place. Please telephone Best4Pests today if you suspect that you have these pests in your lawn or if you would like an annual preventative treatment and we will be happy to carry out a free survey and quotation. Our prices are based on the area to be treated. I will always measure up but if you have a good idea of the area we can quote a price over the telephone.

Best4Pests treat for Chafer Grubs using a professional use only (under licence) treatment. I hold a PA1 and PA6 pesticide licence.  Amateur use products are available for the home gardener that needs to be mixed in a watering can and sprinkled over a lawn over a small area at a time. Our aim is to keep the cost to the customer at around the same price as a DIY treatment but without all the time consuming effort involved and the assured knowledge of a thorough and professional job being done with a professional use product.
